The Lawyer by Eugenius Zinos at ETHAL
With a significant and long-overdue event in the theatrical history of the city and Cyprus, ETHAL concluded its diverse and thematically rich series of parallel events at Technospace. On Friday, December 12, ETHAL and the Limassol Bar Association presented, in the form of a theatrical reading, the comedy The Lawyer by the pioneering playwright and lawyer of the late 19th and early 20th century, Eugenius Zinos.
The play was first performed on February 15, 1923, in the city of Limassol. Eugenius Zinos, who died six years after the premiere of his play, was an ancestor of the writer Cassandra Zinos, whose work Malvina was performed in Cyprus in 1887. Cassandra had two children: Aristides Zinos, the first recognized Cypriot actor, who worked in Athens with the New Stage of K. Christomanos, and Victor Zinos—also an actor with a career outside Cyprus—and Alekos Zinos, an amateur actor. Essentially, this was the first theatrical family in Cyprus at the end of the 19th century.
The reading was directed by Marinos Anogyriatis, with set design by Eva Korai, lighting by Aleksandar Jotovits, and music composed by George Synnos. The actors involved were Marina Vronti, Dimitris Konstantinidis, Andri Evimidi, Giannos Antoniou, Marina Mandri, Minas Tzorakakis, and the Artistic Director of ETHAL, Minas Tingilis.
The event sponsor was the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education, and the media sponsor was Capital TV and Capital FM. The event was under the patronage of Limassol Mayor Andreas Christou.
