THEATRE TRANSLATION SEMINAR
WITH CHRISTINA BABOU-PAGKOURELLI

ETHAL (Limassol Theatre Development Company), on the occasion of the premiere of its 116th theatre production The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh, invited the play’s translator, Christina Babou-Pagourelli, to Cyprus. Taking advantage of this opportunity, ETHAL and the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute co-organized a Theatre Translation Seminar titled Monologue-Dialogue: The Alpha and Omega of Theatrical Texts. The seminar lasted a total of 12 hours and took place at the Goethe Institute in Nicosia on February 17, 18, and 19, 2012.

The seminar program included an introduction to the theory of theatre translation, focusing on the differences and similarities with other literary genres, text analysis (biographical details, historical-social context), dramaturgical processing, and practical work with one-act plays by 20th-century playwrights (Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, David Mamet, etc.). Attendees included theatre scholars, philologists, writers, and translators of theatrical works.
