About us

Pioneering Limassol’s theatrical legacy since 1988, fostering cultural richness and artistic collaboration.

Profile

Who we are and what we're truly passionate about.

ETHAL was founded in 1988 in Limassol. It was the first professional theatre company in the history of the city, but also the first ever created outside the capital, which presented its first theatre productions at the Pattihio Municipal Theatre.

It is a non-profit company which is now subsidised through the Thymeli Project of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation.

In 1991, the director Nikos Charalambous took over the artistic direction of ETHAL and moved its headquarters to an old cinema in the city, renaming it the Praxis Theatre.

ETHAL, the Limassol Theatre, has over 170 productions to its credit and has collaborated with more than 200 artists

ETHAL has also presented its work in England, Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki, Kavala, Veroia and Rhodes), Egypt (Cairo - Experimental Theatre Festival) and Constantinople (6th International Maltepe Theater Festival).

In 2023, the Artistic Director of ETHAL, Mr. Achilleas Grammatikopoulos, and the Artistic Director of DIPETHE Serres, Mr. George Andreou, signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between the two Theater Organizations, supported by the Mayors of Limassol and Serres, Mr. Nicos Nicolaides and Mr. Alexandros Chrysafis. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding took place on the occasion of the theatrical adaptation of the short story The Murderess by Alexandros Papadiamantis. The aim is to strengthen the collaboration between the two organizations as two cultural production hubs in two "frontier" regions of Hellenism—one in the North and one in the South—each influenced differently by a Western Balkan multicultural environment and closer proximity to the East.

Our Mission

As a theatrical development organisation, we do not limit ourselves to our theatrical activity, i.e., the staging of plays, but we also set broader objectives, relating to the theatrical and cultural cultivation of the public in general.

Community & Cultural Enrichment

E.TH.A.L. is committed to the theatrical and cultural cultivation of the public, aiming not only to entertain but also to educate and inspire the community. This is demonstrated through its broad objectives that extend beyond staging plays, encompassing the promotion of theatrical arts as a vital cultural and educational medium.

Youth Education & Development

E.TH.A.L. places a strong emphasis on nurturing the next generation of theater enthusiasts and professionals. This is evident in its establishment of a Children's Stage in 1988, the operation of a Theatre Workshop for children aged 6-15 years since 1997, and the organization of seminars, lectures, and events that cater specifically to young people and theater lovers.

Historical & Cultural Preservation

E.TH.A.L. acknowledges the importance of theater in preserving the national spirit and the cultural identity of Cyprus. By staging a variety of works, including patriotic dramas, ancient Greek tragedies, and plays by renowned Cypriot and international authors, E.TH.A.L. contributes to the ongoing dialogue between past and present, ensuring the rich theatrical heritage of Cyprus remains alive and relevant.
