Let the lights come on!

When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image, and the breath of that universal love which bears and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness overspreads my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me, that it might be the mirror of my soul, as my soul is the mirror of the infinite God!

O my friend — but it is too much for my strength — I sink under the weight of the splendour of these visions! A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.

I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

Symposium: Getting to Know Bost

The Limassol Theatre Development Company (ETHAL), as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations and to commemorate 100 years since the birth of the great artist Mentis Bostantzoglou (Bost), organized a symposium in July 2018 dedicated to the unique cartoonist, humorist, satirist, playwright, lyricist, and painter.

In parallel, an exhibition is being held in the foyer of Technochoros, showcasing Bost’s drawings and cartoons, focusing on his legendary characters, such as the downtrodden Mama Greece, Aneryitsa (Little Unemployed Girl), and Pinaleon (the Always-Hungry One). The exhibition also includes photocopies of Bost’s paintings, books, and lyrics.

Curated by set and costume designer Mariza Partzili, the exhibition offers attendees the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of Bost’s work and the era he lived in—a unique humorist who created a distinctive, entirely personal, and recognizable satirical style.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until December 31, 2018, from Monday to Friday (10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.), and before every performance.

November 23, 24, 30, and December 1, 2013 – Readings of Cypriot Authors’ Plays
Fourteen New Cypriot Plays
As part of the PLAY program

The first installment of the PLAY Program reaches its culmination this month. The theatre community of Cyprus unites to present staged readings of fourteen new plays by Cypriot authors, as part of the PLAY program, organized by the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute and the Cyprus Theatre Organization (THOK).

The staged readings will take place at the New Stage (THOK Theatre) on November 23, 24, 30, and December 1, 2013, during morning and afternoon sessions.

Theatre professionals and groups enthusiastically responded to the invitation by the CCOITI and THOK to participate voluntarily in this effort to support Cypriot works. They joined forces, taking on the task of presenting one of the selected works in a staged reading format.

The goal of these staged readings is to celebrate Cypriot drama, offering theatre professionals and the general public the opportunity for a first encounter with the works of PLAY. More importantly, the aim is for as many theatre groups as possible to select and stage Cypriot works during 2014.

The readings will feature works by the following authors: Yiannis Agisilaou, Sofocles Vergou, Antonis Georgiou, Charalambos Giannou, Eleni Kosma and Korina Kontaxaki, Kostas Mannouris, Anna Marangou, Andreas Nicolaidis, Marios Nicolaou, Melina Papageorgiou, Maria Pavlou, Despina Pyrketti, Antis Roditis, and Kyriakos Spartiatis.

A team of theatre writing consultants, including Magdalena Zira, Maria Mannaridou-Karsera, Lea Maleni, Alexia Papalazarou, Antonis Solomou, and Aemilios Charalambides, worked on selecting and editing the works alongside the authors.

The theatre groups/directors participating in the readings include Theatre Ena (Andreas Araouzos), ETHAL (Minas Tikilis, Loukas Zikos), Theatre Skala (Monika Melekki), OpenArts (Athina Kasiou), RooftopTheatre (Ellada Evangelou), Maria Mannaridou-Karsera, Diomides Koufteros, Marios Mettis, Evripidis Dikajos, Alexia Papalazarou, TheatroTranscendental, Lea Maleni, and Leandros Taliotis.

Theatre Workshops for All…

Theatre Workshops for All…

Lectures by Michalis Pieris and Lambros Lambrou...

It has been almost ten years since ETHAL last organized a workshop for adult theatre enthusiasts, during the era of Theatre Praxis. This was a frequent request from many theatre lovers.

This year, under the supervision of ETHAL’s Artistic Director Minas Tikilis—who has twice in the past directed amateur theatre groups in Limassol, including Tartuffe by Molière with Theatrical Poreia and The Exception and the Rule by Bertolt Brecht with ENAF of Ayios Fylas—the group meetings began every Saturday morning at 9:30 at the Technochoros. The weekly meetings are enriched with additional sessions and workshops featuring other theatre professionals once or twice a month. After the November sessions, where guests included Theatre Studies Professor Dr. Savvas Patsalidis (Friday, 25/11/11) and lighting designer Panagiotis Manousis (18/11/11), a frequent visitor to Cyprus for various artistic projects, the December sessions featured director and screenwriter Adonis Floridis. Next on the agenda are lectures by university professor and poet Michalis Pieris, who will speak on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at 7:15 PM on Cretan Theatre, and choreographer Lambros Lambrou, on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 10 AM.

Saturday, January 21, 2012
At the Dance Centre of Limassol Municipality (Garden Theatre)
Time: 9:30 AM

Who Saw Electra in Ballet?
A quick glance at my experience as a classical choreographer working with ancient drama and myth. Visual material will be used to reflect on my memories, the despair, and the challenges I faced in reconciling Euripides’ tragedy Electra with classical ballet.

TEN YEARS OF PRESENCE- CELEBRATION OF ETHAL'S SECOND STAGE

TEN YEARS OF PRESENCE: CELEBRATION OF ETHAL’S SECOND STAGE

TEN YEARS OF PRESENCE: CELEBRATION OF ETHAL’S SECOND STAGE

From the performance of the play Beast on the Moon by Armenian-American Richard Kalinoski in February 2000, directed by Varnavas Kyriasis, to the premiere, just before Christmas, of Israeli Ilan Hatsor’s The Slaughterhouse, directed by Minas Tikilis, ten years have passed. During this time, ETHAL, the theatre in Limassol, has produced an impressive 110 theatrical productions.

This uphill yet highly creative journey of ETHAL, closely linked to the arrival of its artistic director Minas Tikilis in Cyprus and significantly to the move to the Technochoros on Franklin Roosevelt Street, has been marked by reflection and dialogue. On Saturday, October 30, at the atrium of the Rector’s Office of the Cyprus University of Technology in the Limassol Molos area, ETHAL engaged with industry professionals, the local community, audiences, collaborators, and students of CUT.

From Niki Marangou to Mamet, and from Mamet to Ibsen, Catalan playwright Sergi Belbel, British playwrights Rona Munro and Charlotte Keatley, Fassbinder, Pinter, Bernhard, and Bertolt Brecht’s Mahagonny, as well as Greek playwright Tsiolis, Irish playwright Marie Jones, Adonis Floridis, and the uniqueness of Kavvadias, ETHAL’s Second Stage has made a remarkable impact on Cyprus’s theatrical scene.

Speakers at the event included Evi Gavriilidis, Nona Moleski, Katia Schiza-Lamari, theatre scholar and director Nikiforos Papandreou from the Experimental Art Stage in Thessaloniki.

Saturday, October 30, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., at the Atrium of the Rector’s Office of CUT in Limassol.

The event featured a video screening, an exhibition of photographs from performances by Christos Avraamides, and an open discussion.
