A New Adaptation in the Cypriot Dialect
In collaboration with Anyhow Theatre Ensemble

For its Summer 2026 production, ETHAL, in collaboration with Anyhow Theatre Ensemble, presents a contemporary adaptation in the Cypriot dialect of The Bourgeois Gentleman, based on the celebrated comedy by the great French playwright Molière.

This production marks the final chapter of the trilogy launched by ETHAL in 2025 with The Island, followed by Blood Wedding Crowns (Matomena Stefana). The trilogy explores themes of language, communities, communication, dialogue, multiculturalism, and collective memory.

In The Bourgeois Gentleman, Molière satirises the vanity of a wealthy social climber and his desperate yet comical attempts to win the affection of a young marchioness, despite being married and having a daughter of marriageable age. At the same time, he becomes the target of various opportunists eager to exploit his ambitions, including a young marquis pursuing the same woman.

Our adaptation transports the story to Cyprus in the late 1970s through the character of Zenonis, a kind-hearted yet ambitious man from a village near Limassol. Dreaming of improving his social standing, Zenonis ventures into investments and strives to enter the circles of high society, while also seeking a prestigious match for his daughter.

Although married, he becomes infatuated with a beautiful and wealthy woman from Nicosia and is prepared to spend recklessly in his efforts to impress her and win her attention. His naivety, however, makes him an easy target.

A cunning Athenian enters his life, taking advantage of his dreams and aspirations. Under the guise of investment opportunities, foreign language lessons, modern lifestyle trends, and extravagant gifts, he succeeds in swindling Zenonis out of substantial sums of money.

Through comic misunderstandings, lively situations, and sharp satire, this adaptation highlights the timeless themes of human vanity and the desire for social acceptance, offering audiences an entertaining and highly relevant theatrical experience infused with a distinctly Cypriot identity.

To bring this summer production to life, ETHAL reunites the core artistic team behind the previous two productions of the trilogy, with the theatre’s Artistic Director, Achilleas Grammatikopoulos, once again leading the production as director.

185th ETHAL production and continuation of the successful collaboration with Point To Contemporary Theater and Anyhow Theatre Ensemble

The production “Blood Wedding Crowns”, an adaptation of “Bodas de Sangre” by F. G. Lorca, one of the greatest works of world theatre, constitutes the second part of a trilogy that began with “The Island” and delves into ETHAL’s thematic focus for 2025–2026: “Language, communities, communication, dialogue, multiculturalism and collective memory.”

The plot of the play is transferred to a mixed village in Cyprus in the early 1960s, where love and death intersect with political and social division. Through the words of Federico García Lorca, the play engages in dialogue with history, memory, and the wounds of the land.

This particular adaptation seeks to illuminate the complex identity of Cyprus, at a time when love, honor, and blood acquire tragic immediacy. The performance brings to the stage actors from both communities, capable of moving between realistic and lyrical writing, conveying conflict through physicality, silence, and song. Actors with exceptional vocal, movement, and speech abilities, essential for creating the lyrical, otherworldly, and metaphysical moments of the performance.

Blood Wedding Crowns is not merely a Cypriot version of Lorca? it is an act of cultural reconciliation. Through love and death, the play becomes a bridge between two communities and two languages. The Cypriot version of Lorca’s tragedy reflects the past, converses with the present, and envisions a future where, perhaps, the “blood wedding crowns” may once again become crowns of peace.

The Story:

The story is set in the Cypriot countryside, shortly after Independence. A wedding between two families of different ethnic origins turns into a field of conflict, love, and bloodshed.

The Mother, marked by the murder of her husband and younger son by the Demir family, gives her blessing for her elder son to marry. Soon, however, she learns that the Bride had once been engaged to Kenan, a relative of the Demirs, connected to the old blood feud between the two families.

Shortly before the wedding, Kenan meets the Bride and confesses his desire for her. She rejects him, yet she continues to harbor feelings for him. On the night of the wedding, amid the celebration, it is revealed that the two have run away together. The Groom, blinded by rage, pursues them…

ETHAL’s 184th production, in collaboration with the enact group

The Chandelier is a contemporary Cypriot play that captures the turbulent gathering of a typical Cypriot family. On the evening before the youngest son’s wedding, the “formal living room” reserved for guests is freshly painted and ready to welcome friends and relatives for the traditional “zomata” ceremony. The only thing left is to assemble the DIY chandelier the father has purchased. Within a few hours, the entire family gathers to help, while nationwide power cuts — known as “Blackout Plan” — are taking place, making the family’s task even more challenging.

The dramatized version of the classic, autobiographical short story by Georgios Vizyenos adapted and directed by Marina Vrondi and produced by the Limassol Theatre Development Company (ETHAL). Actors Giorgos Evagorou, Nektarios Theodorou, Thanasis Ioannou, Kwnstantina Xenophontos and Panagiota Papageorgiou share the stage with the musician Giorgos Kalogirou and together they build an ensemble, from which the story’s characters are being elaborately emerged, creating an interesting theatrical narrative atmosphere.
