“The Chandelier” by Marina Makri

ETHAL’s 184th production, in collaboration with the enact group

The Chandelier is a contemporary Cypriot play that captures the turbulent gathering of a typical Cypriot family. On the evening before the youngest son’s wedding, the “formal living room” reserved for guests is freshly painted and ready to welcome friends and relatives for the traditional “zomata” ceremony. The only thing left is to assemble the DIY chandelier the father has purchased. Within a few hours, the entire family gathers to help, while nationwide power cuts — known as “Blackout Plan” — are taking place, making the family’s task even more challenging.

The Taming of the Shrew

ETHAL’s Summer Production in collaboration with Point To Contemporary Theater and Anyhow Theatre Ensemble

“The taming of the Bugbear”
by Alekos Sakellarios and Christos Giannakopoulos

Is it possible for two absolutely different worlds to converge and coexist? Is it possible for someone, who was deceived to forgive the deceiver? Especially if, because of the exact fraud, the “deceived” along with his three sons, were taken care of, have eaten freshly made, homemade food and the “deceiver” has surrounded them with a lot of love and care?
Is it possible for the little, winged, trickster God to solve any ideological differences and put order in chaos?

These are some of the questions that ETHAL, Point To Contemporary Theater and Anyhow Theatre Ensemble are going to try to answer with this collaboration in Alecos Sakellarios and Christos Giannakopoulos play “The taming of the Bugbear”.

A political comedy, masked as a joyful scenic play, which was staged for the first time by the troupe of Katerina Andreades- Vasilis Logothetidis under the title “An unfortunate lady”, then by the troupe of Lambros Constantaras – Christina Sylva and later on became a cinematic success of Lambros Constantaras.

Once again, ETHAL partners up with two other theatrical teams, extending the cooperation among three theatrical organizations in a summer production for the first time, continuing the cooperation with newer groups, something that inaugurated with the previous production.

Fanouris Petorcheilos, a Director of Marine Academy, a widower with three sons, struggles to coordinate the chaos that rules his home. The life of this incorruptible bugbear will turn upside down when the feminine presence will appear, the young housekeeper Mrs. Anna. Her actions will change for better the life of the four men, but in reality, Anna approached the mariner to ask for a favor on behalf of her younger brother, who is about to be expelled from the Academy because of some sort of misdemeanor.
When the truth surfaces, things are getting complicated in a skein of secrets, lies, worries, love, songs and dancing. What will happen when the skein unfolds?

“Romeo and Juliet: a play that was never realised”

ETHAL’s 180th Production

An innovative collaboration, an innovative show For the first time three theatrical organisations, ETHAL- Limassol’s Theatre Company-, the newly founded Audere Productions- with their fresh artistic approach and Point To Contemporary Theate – with their steady appearance at the theatrical events of Nicosia, join forces for a common artistic purpose.

The adaptation is undertaken by Audere’s young duo of directors, Michalis Kolokotronis and Sophia Mavromichalis, on the translation by Erikos Mbelies, the crew is consisted of both by renowned and emerged artists who already have showed interesting pieces of artistic work.
On stage, the parts of the students who are preparing to perform the most emblematic love story of the global dramaturgy, are incarnated by some talented actors of the new generation of Cyprus Theatre.

Plot Summary:

Athens, March 1973: The students of the School of Law of the University of Athens are preparing William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”. Because of the oppression and the censorship by Junta, the students, in an effort to taking action against the situation, are transforming an old theatre building of the city to a place for secret gatherings, where they rehearse, write foreclosures, preparing and organising resistance actions. In these turbulent and dark times, the students present the story of Romeo and Juliet as an act of resistance. Lead by the almighty Eros, their juvenile force acts as a catalyst both to the development of the play and the resistance against any form of violence, censorship and autocracy.
